Amalaya Gran Corte is a flavorful red blend from the Calchaquí Valley, Salta (Argentina), sourced from high-altitude vineyards between 1700 and 1828 m. The combination of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Tannat on sandy, rocky soils with large diurnal temperature shifts results in powerful, fresh and concentrated wines.
The blend includes approximately 85% Malbec, 9–10% Cabernet Franc and 5–6% Tannat. Hand-harvested grapes, berry selection, fermentation in small concrete tanks; followed by 12 months of aging in French and American oak barrels (second or third fill).
Deep ruby red in color. The nose shows aromas of red and black fruits, floral and spicy hints, with subtle vanilla notes from the oak.
Taste: concentrated, complex and elegant; rounded fruity tannins and a long, delicate finish with refreshing acidity.
4/5 Vivino
Food Pairing
Amalaya Gran Corte pairs beautifully with rich dishes. Try with:
- Grilled beef or lamb chops – spice and oak complement its bold character.
- Stews such as boeuf bourguignon – balance of concentration and acidity.
- Aged cheeses and charcuterie – fruity body and firm tannins harmonize.
- Grilled vegetables or mushrooms – match earthy and spicy tones.
Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Decanting is recommended, especially for young vintages (0–3 years).
Cellaring Potential
A blend that is already approachable, yet ages well thanks to its tannins and acidity:
- Young (0–3 years): ripe red and wild berries, soft tannins, fresh acidity.
- Mid-mature (4–7 years): more complex, with integration of oak, spice and vanilla.
- Fully mature (8–12 years): notes of leather, cedar, dark plum, smooth texture and long finish.
Optimal drinking window: 2023–2035. Store at 13–15 °C in a dark cellar.
More About the Winery
Amalaya, managed by Hess Family Wine Estates and located at around 1800 m in the Calchaquí Valley, stands for “hope for a miracle” – referring to the discovery of water in the desert.
The estate manages about 80 ha of high-altitude vineyards (Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, etc.) on sandy and rocky soils in a semi-arid climate, with only 120–180 mm of rainfall annually.
Gran Corte is fermented in concrete, followed by 12 months of aging in French and American oak (second/third fill), giving the wine both fruit and structural finesse.
Deep ruby color with red and black fruit aromas, spice and vanilla; supported by round tannins and a long, fresh finish. The 2020 vintage was praised by IWSC for its balance and texture.
Motto: “Amalaya – hope for a miracle.”
