Description

Hand-harvested grapes from old vineyards result in this beautiful very long-aged port. It shows a dark red appearance with brown-black reflections. On the nose, complex and intense aromas of vanilla, spices, dried nuts, dried fruit, caramel, figs... followed by a very beautiful palate of roasted coffee beans and an overall very rich yet soft taste. A special and unique port. Comes in a gift box.

4.4 Vivino

Serving suggestions:

  • Dark chocolate and chocolate desserts
  • Roasted nuts and almonds
  • Aged cheeses such as Stilton or old Gouda
  • Crème brûlée or rich dessert tarts
  • Foie gras

This 40-year-old tawny is best enjoyed with desserts that have rich, intense flavors or as a luxurious digestif after a festive meal. Serve around 14–16 °C to allow the complex aromas and deep flavors to fully express themselves. Sediment may be present.

Storage:
This port can certainly be stored for some time but will evolve little in the bottle. The aging was completed before bottling.

Additional information:

Red and white port is made from various grape varieties; about 80 are used. All grow on the steep slopes of the beautiful Douro Valley in Portugal. The prince of port grapes is Touriga Nacional, but due to its naturally low yield, it is rarely replanted. Other excellent varieties include Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Cão, and Tinta Amarela. The varieties for white port are Malvasia Dorada, Malvasia Fina, Gouveio, and Rabigato.
Porto is what we call a fortified wine, meaning a wine whose fermentation is halted early by the addition of wine alcohol. This technique ensures not all sugars are converted to alcohol, resulting in the sweet taste of port.
The quality of a port is defined by the balance of fruit, flavor, and alcohol. A good port is never recognized by a burning taste, but by a present and complex mouthfeel.

The quinta (independent wine estate) of Santa Eufémia was founded in 1894 by Bernardo Rodrigues de Carvalho and is located on the left bank of the Douro at an altitude of 300 m, between Peso da Régua and Pinhão, in the heart of the oldest recognized wine region in the world: the Douro. The estate has 40 ha of vineyards comprising all the typical grape varieties for port wines. Slate soils and terraces form the typical landscape. Casa Santa Eufémia produces gems of port using the traditional method, but with a distinctive touch from the Carvalho family, which has managed the estate since its founding. Casa de Santo Eufémia is currently led by Pedro Carvalho. Due to low production, this port is rarely seen outside Portugal, but within the country it stands out for its top quality and is highly appreciated.
