Description

Beautiful golden wine in your glass. On the nose, you will detect ginger, lots of dried fruit such as clementine, peach, apricot, and other exotic fruits, along with honey and nuts. On the palate, you will taste caramel, honey, and abundant dried fruit. This wine will give you a soft full velvety sensation with a gigantic long finish that is very complex.
This top-quality product is made 100% from the Furmint grape, a Hungarian variety mainly used for dry white wines. For this dessert wine, the grapes were left to ripen on the vine for a long time, allowing the sugars to accumulate richly. After fermentation in new oak barrels, this liquid gold has further aged 36 months in old oak barrels.

 4.3/5 Vivino

Serving suggestions:
Serve as an aperitif, with dessert, with foie gras, and even alongside game dishes and blue cheeses like Stilton or Roquefort. Once opened, the bottle can be kept in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Cellaring:
The 2017 vintage is considered exceptional, with rich concentration and long aging potential. Nevertheless, the wine is still young and can continue to develop over time. It is currently at its peak, but can still be kept for many decades. This wine will continue to evolve in the bottle. In my personal cellar, I have examples from before 2000 still maturing.

Additional information:
Among all Eastern European countries, Hungary can proudly claim a truly world-famous wine of the highest quality: Tokaji Aszú, called by Louis XIV “the wine of kings, the king of wines.” Similar climatic conditions exist as in the Sauternes region in France, but this wine is not comparable to a Sauternes.

The indigenous grape varieties Furmint and Hárslevelű concentrate their sugar content in the fall due to noble rot (Botrytis cinerea).
The botrytis-affected grapes are handpicked individually and collected in small 25 kg barrels called puttonyos.
A paste is made from these and added to 136 liters of high-quality base wine, already with residual sugar.

The number of puttonyos added—3, 4, 5, or 6—determines sweetness and price.
3 puttonyos: 60–90 g/l residual sugar
4 puttonyos: 90–120 g/l
5 puttonyos: 120–150 g/l
6 puttonyos: >150 g/l
Despite the high residual sugar, the mild acidity ensures balance and harmony.

This wine has a fairly high acidity (11.5 g/l) but is perfectly balanced with 150 g residual sugar.

Mysterious Mount Tokaj… seen from above, it rises above the autumn mist, its slopes gleaming with golden vineyards, and its summit overlooks the vast Hungarian plain to the distant southern horizon. On a clear day, Slovakia and Ukraine can even be seen. The undisputed king of Hungarian vineyards, Mount Tokaj, is located in the north of the country, 230 km east of Budapest. This legendary place produces exceptional wines, served at the court of Louis XIV, who called Tokaj the “King of Wines and Wine of Kings.”
