Description

The wine is 50% fermented in neutral oak barrels and the other half in stainless steel tanks. Enjoy the golden-yellow color and aromas of tropical fruit, red and green apple, vanilla, toasted bread, butter, and beautifully integrated wood notes. This Chardonnay is full-bodied with a medium-length, refreshing, velvety finish. A very fine entry-level wine from California.

 3.9/5 Vivino

Serving:
Pairs well with smoked and grilled fish and fish with wine sauce. Also excellent with poultry stew, waterzooi, and lamb dishes. Recently served as an aperitif wine with a large selection of appetizers = perfect. Serve at 11°C.

Storage:
Best enjoyed young. Do not store this wine for longer than 6 years.

Additional Information:

Fermentation and Aging of this Wine:
50% barrel-fermented in neutral American oak barrels. 50% fermented in stainless steel tanks. The barrel-fermented portion was aged on lees for several months. Bâtonnage, the art of stirring the barrels, was performed monthly. Half of the stainless steel portion was also aged on lees for months, while the other half was racked clean to maintain the fresh fruit characters.

History:
CH Wente immigrated from Hamburg, Germany, to America in the late 1800s, learned winemaking from a German named Charles Krug in Napa Valley, and established his first 47-acre Estate and Winery in 1883. He chose the Livermore Valley for its renowned soils and climate. In 1908, CH planted the first Chardonnay vines in the Livermore Valley.

In 1912, Ernest Wente, a second-generation UC Davis student, convinced his father and founder, CH Wente, to import Chardonnay cuttings from F. Richter Nursery in Montpellier, France, to the Livermore Valley. Ernest selected vines with the best health and flavors, grafted them together, and propagated these traits. This eventually led to the creation of the 'Wente Clone.' Today, more than 75% of all California Chardonnay originates from the Wente Clone and the Wente family estate.

Wente produced sacramental wines during Prohibition to keep the winery and vineyards operational. After the repeal of the National Prohibition Act (Volstead Act) in 1933, Ernest and his brother Herman Wente released the country's first varietally-labeled Chardonnay, a 1936 vintage. Ernest and his son Karl L. Wente pioneered new vineyard plantings in Monterey County's Arroyo Seco region in 1964, planting Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Chardonnay. In 1966, Wente Vineyards opened its Tasting Room in Livermore Valley, becoming one of California's first tasting rooms.

Throughout the late 1970s and continuing today, fourth-generation winegrowers Eric, Philip, and Carolyn Wente expanded the winery, vineyards, and visitor facilities. In 1986, The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards opened, becoming California's third winery restaurant. The annual Wente Vineyards concert series was also launched, attracting top artists and thousands of guests. In 1998, The Course at Wente Vineyards, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Greg Norman, opened, enhancing the Livermore Valley wine country lifestyle. Meanwhile, Wente Vineyards became one of California's largest wine exporters to over 75 countries.

In 2010, Wente Vineyards received one of the first certifications as a California Certified Sustainable Vineyard and Winery, and The Course at Wente Vineyards earned Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary status. Today, fifth-generation winegrowers Karl, Christine, Jordan, Aly, and Niki Wente are active in various roles, from operations and viticulture to marketing. Their legacy is yet to be established, but they are deeply passionate about continuing the family tradition of sustainable farming and producing the finest quality wines.
