Serving suggestions:
Perfect as a digestif or with blue cheese, nut-based desserts, or a slice of pecan pie.
Note: a light sediment may be present in the bottle. After opening, it will remain good for about 3 weeks—store it cool, closed, and dark.
Storage:
This port can still be stored for some time but will not evolve much further in the bottle. The aging took place before bottling.
Additional information:
Red and white ports are made from various grape varieties—around 80 are in use. All grow on the steep slopes of the beautiful Douro Valley in Portugal. The prince of port grapes is Touriga Nacional, but due to its naturally low yield, it is not widely replanted. Other excellent varieties include Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Cão, and Tinta Amarela. The white port varieties include Malvasia Dorada, Malvasia Fina, Gouveio, and Rabigato.
Port is what we call a fortified wine. This means fermentation is prematurely halted by the addition of wine alcohol. This technique preserves natural sugars in the wine, resulting in port’s characteristic sweetness.
The quality of a port lies in its balance of fruit, flavor, and alcohol. A good port should never have a burning taste but instead offer a full and complex mouthfeel.
The quinta (independent wine estate) of Santa Eufémia was founded in 1894 by Bernardo Rodrigues de Carvalho and is located on the left bank of the Douro at an altitude of 300 m between Peso da Régua and Pinhão, in the heart of the world's oldest recognized wine region: the Douro Valley. The estate includes 40 hectares of vineyards with all the typical grape varieties used for port production. The slate soil and terraced vineyards are a defining feature of the landscape. At Casa Santa Eufémia, exceptional ports are crafted using traditional methods, but with a unique, personal touch from the Carvalho family, who have run the estate since its founding. Casa de Santa Eufémia is currently managed by Pedro Carvalho. Due to limited production, this port is rarely found outside Portugal, but within the country, it stands out for its top quality and is highly appreciated.
