A deep black wine with a purple sheen in the glass. On the nose, we are greeted by a fireworks display of aromas: red and black fruit, bay leaf, coconut, leather, vanilla, chocolate, and soft spices. On the palate, this is a fleshy and concentrated wine with silky smooth and beautifully integrated tannins and a remarkably long finish. This wine is made from vines that are at least 60 years old.
4.2/5 on Vivino (2020 had no score yet)Serving suggestions:
Serve between 17 and 18 degrees. Pairs well with fine dishes such as game, truffles, lamb, and also delicious with a piece of dark chocolate. Open at least 2 hours in advance. If still young, decant. If older, you can carefully decant.
Storage:
This wine can be stored for another 20 years. It will soften over time, and when you taste an older version, you will experience the strength of the Cahors region and its Malbec wines!
Additional information:
Château Lamartine is located at the far western edge of the Cahors Appellation, on the oldest terraces of the Lot Valley. On these clay-limestone terroirs, the 37 hectares face south, ensuring perfect ripeness for the Malbec.
For four generations, the Gayraud family has devoted the greatest care to winemaking. This is the key to achieving a pure expression of the terroirs. In 2016, Alain and Brigitte passed the torch to their children.
“Our brother and sister tandem is our strength, our terroirs are our wealth. Our philosophy: always cleaner viticulture, always finer wines.” LISE & BENJAMIN
In the southwest of France, north of Toulouse and east of Bordeaux, lies the Cahors appellation. Halfway between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, the appellation benefits from an ideal microclimate for ripening Malbec.
The soil, composed of clay and limestone, guarantees the freshness of the wines.
In the late 1960s, a group of about fifteen winemakers united to defend the project of creating an AOP. Edouard, Lise and Benjamin's great-grandfather, was one of them.
They eventually achieved this in 1971. Château Lamartine is still very proud to be part of the Cahors Appellation.
In recent years, the appellation has continued to gain attention and is now recognized as the original terroir of Malbec.
The new challenge for Cahors is the classification of the different terroirs. Today, we are only at the beginning with the distinction between valley and Causse terroirs.
The Cahors appellation is definitely one to watch...
This 100% Malbec wine comes from an old terroir of 5 hectares where yields are very low. The wine undergoes a 40-day maceration and is aged for 24 months in new French oak.
