The wine has a beautiful dark ruby red color. On the nose, it reveals soft notes of red fruits such as cherry, sour cherry, and lychee. There are also floral notes of rose petals and spicy hints of sandalwood, rosemary, and lavender. On tasting, it is velvety in the mouth, with smooth and elegant tannins, a nice balance, and a touch of freshness that makes it lively and flavorful. It offers a long finish with juicy red berries and a small mineral note at the end. If you let it age a bit longer (up to 10 years), you may discover aromas of mushrooms as well. In any case, you will taste the winemaker's love in creating this very good traditional Chianti.
Serving Suggestions:
The Pèppoli pairs excellently with game, grilled beef, or lamb. It is perfect for festive meals. Serve at 17°C.
Storage:
It is ready to drink now but can be stored for at least another 10 years. Depending on the vintage and conditions, this Chianti can be kept even longer. A tip: open a bottle from time to time to taste. How do you know if you can store it longer? Come take a course here.
Additional Information:
The Pèppoli estate is located 5 kilometers northeast of the Tenuta Tignanello estate, covering a total area of 100 hectares, with 50 hectares planted with vineyards. It is home to the Peppoli Chianti Classico DOCG. The estate has a long tradition of producing Peppoli Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Peppoli Red Wine Vinegar, with Peppoli wine being traditionally transformed into vinegar.
The History
In 1379, when the Guelphs were defeated by the Ghibellines, the nearby monastery of Badia a Passignano was partially destroyed and later abandoned. The extensive properties, including Tenuta Pèppoli, were divided among Florentine noble families. The first owners were the Gondi family, followed by the Cerchi family, who built a small elegant chapel in the sixteenth century in honor of their ancestor Saint Umiliana. The chapel has recently been restored to its original splendor. Marchesi Antinori has owned the estate since 1985, the year of their 600th anniversary of the family's winemaking business. The Vallombrosian monks have been tending the vineyards since the Middle Ages.
Vineyards and Olive Groves
Despite the unusual eastern/northeastern exposure of the vineyards, the microclimate is ideal. The small surrounding valley keeps the area warm and protected, and the gravelly soils are rich in minerals that give the Sangiovese grape a vibrant fruity character. The Pèppoli vineyards are primarily planted with Sangiovese with a small percentage of complementary varieties such as Merlot, Syrah, and Malvasia. There are 27 hectares (67 acres) of olive groves with 5,500 olive trees, some centuries old. The Frantoio, Leccino, and Moraiolo varieties are cultivated to produce Pèppoli's organic extra virgin olive oil.
